Ranks in Tae Kwon Do (at least in the World Tae Kwon Do Academy)

Rank is indicated by the color and stripes on one's belt

Everyone begins as a white belt. Progression through the ranks is done by testing. At each level, the student is expected to know progressively more complex forms, self-defense techniques, and breaking techniques. At the senior levels, students are expected also to know throws.

Up until the red belt level, a white uniform (Do Bak) is worn. Then the student moves into a black Do Bak to indicate that he/she has all of the skills and knowledge of a black belt, but without the control. Starting at provisional black the Do Bak is again white but featuring a black collar.
