Q: What should I do if I see a crime being committed?
A: Call 911 and tell the dispatcher what has happened. You do not have to give your name.

Q: What should I do if I want to talk to a police officer, but it is not an emergency?
A: You can call 245-9222. There is an officer on duty twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year. You will reach a dispatcher who can have the officer on duty meet with you at your residence or at SJPD (301 Dewey Drive), or the officer will call you back.

Q: Does the Village have "leash laws?"
A: Yes, the Village enforces leash laws, which means a pet (cat or dog) must be on a leash or under the owner's control when it is off their property. If there is a stray animal on your property that is causing a problem, you can call the SJPD to have the animal caught. Animal Control for the Village is contracted through  Morgan County at 202 West Oak Street, Jacksonville, IL 62650
217-245-4015.

Q: What happens to dogs and cats the Village picks up as strays?
A: Information on these animals is logged in the Police Department so that if the owner calls, they can be returned. There is a $20 fine which must be paid at Village Hall before the owner can pick up the animal. If the owner cannot be located, the animal is taken to a local veterinarian with whom the Village has a contract. There may be an additional fee of $12-$15/day from the vet for housing the animal, which also must be paid before the animal is returned. If the animal is not claimed within 5-7 days, the animal is destroyed.
